2020 Fall Season Update
Submitted By Administrator on Sunday, September 6, 2020
COVID-19, beginning with the abrupt cancellation of the 2019-2020 season, has changed hockey for the upcoming season and for the foreseeable future.  Southpoint Minor Hockey is committed to a modified season for both OMHA (Capitals) and OWHA (Stars), starting in September 2020, offering a safe hockey environment that is following OHF and municipal guidelines.

With strict OHF and municipal guidelines, the planning for the modified season has already begun with registration closing on September 1st, 2020.  The guidelines which are being followed allow less players on the ice across all age groups, resulting in a substantial increase in ice demands at local arenas.

In recent weeks, Southpoint Minor Hockey was unable to secure ice at the Wheatley Arena for the upcoming planned fall season and as such, all SMHA practices and games will be occurring at the Nature Fresh Rec Complex in Leamington.

Southpoint Minor Hockey continues to be committed to keeping minor hockey in Wheatley and had intended to increase our usage, including but not limited to the hosting of half ice hockey for which a portable set of boards was recently secured.

We are planning for a safe and fun fall session, but we do not know what a January session will look like at this time.  Should ice be available at the Wheatley Arena for the winter session, Southpoint has every intention to rent the ice and keep minor hockey in Wheatley.

Requirements at Nature Fresh Rec complex currently include a limit of only 25 (players & coaches) with 1 parent per participant permitted for each session.

At the U6, U7 & U8 age groups, SMHA is currently working to create groups of 20 players to accommodate the above requirements.

For the Capitals program at the U9 - U18 divisions, SMHA continues to work with our neighbouring associations in Essex & Erie Northshore, at allocating players in appropriate Tier 1 & Tier 2 player bubbles of 50.

For the Stars program at the U11 - U15 divisions, SMHA continues to work with our neighbouring association in South County, at allocating players in appropriate player bubbles of 50.

These processes are not without challenges, and further communication surrounding player bubble/group assignments will be communicated when finalized.

Southpoint has submitted our Return to Play plan and is anxiously awaiting OMHA approval to move forward. The tentative start date of all Tiers & Divisions is Saturday September 26.
