What Levels of Hockey does SMHA offer?


Southpoint Minor Hockey offers the following levels of hockey:


Mite Development Program – Is a structured “learn to play” hockey program designed to introduce players and parents alike to the games basic skills. The program enables players to become contributing members of a team; to develop self-confidence and to experience a sense of personal achievement. These goals are achieved in an atmosphere of cooperation and fun. Development practices begin in mid-September with 1/2 ice games beginning in November. For boys and girls aged 4 and 5.

Tyke Development Program – Is a structured hockey program designed to build on the games basic skills. The program enables players to learn the rules of the game and learn to become contributing members of a team; to develop self-confidence and to experience a sense of personal achievement. Development practices begin in mid-September with full ice games beginning in November. For boys and girls aged 6 and 7.

Local League for players aged 8-19
– Southpoint Minor Hockey is a member of the local league program for players interested in recreational level hockey. There is minor travel involved in this league which sees players play games in Kingsville, Harrow, Tilbury, Essex, and other surrounding centers. Practices begin in mid-September with games beginning in October.

OWHA Female Hockey Interlock for players aged 7-21
- Southpoint Minor Hockey offers young women a chance to play through the Southpoint Stars. Female hockey players are encouraged to live by the Values of the Ontario Women's Hockey League: Fair Play, Fun, Excellence and Good Citizenship. The annual Southpoint Stars Keith Lindsay Memorial Tournament includes over 35 OWHA house league teams from Novice through Intermediate level from all over the province. Southpoint Stars also hosts two Midget B and BB travel teams who have both had very successful seasons over the past few years. 

Travel Hockey - Southpoint Minor Hockey is an 'A' Center and offers 2 levels of Travel hockey for players interested in higher level of competition. Players selected for a Travel teams are required to pay the General Registration Fee, and an additional Travel Fee depending on the number of players selected to the team. Additional costs will also include Tournaments (entry fees, hotel costs, meals, gas etc) and Jerseys. Teams may choose to fundraise to off set some of these additional expenses.

There are 2 levels of Travel Hockey “A” and “AE”.

'A' Travel Teams
– The top players are first selected for the “A” team.  The Southpoint “A” Travel Teams participate in the Bluewater Hockey League and travel to centres such as Essex, Kent, Belle River, Windsor, Riverside, LaSalle, Amherstburg, and Erie North Shore.


'AE' – Additional Entry
– Southpoint Minor Hockey offers Additional Entry teams as needed in Novice, Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget. Additional Entry offers players who have been not been selected for an “A” team to still participate in Travel Hockey. The AE teams also play in the Bluewater Hockey League. AE offers a stepping stone to “A” hockey. The number of AE teams are decided on based on the numbers at the "A" tryouts. Players must first tryout for the "A" team to qualify for trying out for the AE team.
